Philadelphia's Mural Arts Program,
founded in 1984 as an anti-graffiti network, is
dedicated to eradicating destructive graffiti and
addressing neighborhood blight.

During the 1980s, this wonderful organization hired mural
artists to reach out to graffiti writers and teach them to
re-direct their energies by learning to paint murals, thus
beautifying their neighborhoods as they learned.
The result is many a stunning and amazing murals, stretching the
entire length and width of homes and buildings in Philadelphia's
underprivileged neighborhoods, as well as a
better outlook on life for a group of teens, children, and
adults who've found a new cause in life. |
The
Philadelphia Mural Arts Program began conducting tours of these
magnificent works of art in 1998 and many have taken-advantage of
these docent-led trolley tours.
Guides
provide the public with a behind-the-scenes look of how the murals
are made and explain through stories and humor just how the program
has changed the lives of many inner-city youth.
Weekly
Wednesday and Saturday tours feature many different Philadelphia
neighborhoods and groups or individuals may combine tours with lunch
at a fine Philadelphia restaurant.
