The Rodin Museum in Philadelphia
is dedicated to the works of famous French sculptor, Auguste Rodin.
Administered by the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the collection in
the musem was a gift from Jules Mastbaum, a wealthy Philadelphia
philanthropist, who began collecting the works of Rodin in 1923
with the intent of founding a museum in his city.

|
By 1926,
he had assembled the largest collection of Rodin works outside
of Paris and, though he died before his dream was realized,
the museum opened in 1929.
The Rodin
Museum houses 124 sculptures and the collection includes
bronze casts of some of the French artist's most famous
works such as The Thinker, The Burghers of Calais, and Eternal
Springtime.
Rodin is known to have derived the
inspiration for his sculptures from literary sources
such as the Bible, and
|
the poems of French author Charles Beaudelaire.
Rodin introduced some very important technical innovations to the
history of sculpture and his works were so lifelike that he was
often accused of using human models to design his sculptures when,
in fact, his art came from his imagination.
Visitors will also enjoy strolling through the peaceful, pristine
gardens that surround the Rodin Museum and were part of the original
plans designed by French landscape architect Jacques Greber.
