The Philadelphia Museum of Art was originally built as the art gallery for Philadelphia's centennial celebration in 1876. The Philadelphia Museum of Art is considered to be one of the finest art museums in the world. With over 300,000 pieces in 200 galleries, the collection is staggering and features the

world's greatest artists. The building itself is a masterpiece.

Sitting at the end of the sprawling Benjamin Franklin Parkway, the museum was built in the design of a Greek temple but in Roman proportions, covering 10 acres.

The huge steps that lead up to the front entrance have achieved fame as the steps that Philadelphia native Sylvester Stallone scaled in the first "Rocky" movie.

Permanent collections at the museum include galleries devoted to

East Asian Art; European Decorative Arts; Prints, Drawings and Photographs; Modern and Contemporary art; Costume and Textiles; European Painting and Sculpture; American Art, and Indian and Himalayan Art.

Several special exhibits come to the museum each year and the Philadelphia Museum of Art also holds lecture series, concerts, and special dinners and gala events. Tickets are sometimes required for special showings.

The ArtWorks museum store offers original paintings and limited edition prints as well as a great selection of crafts, clothing, fine jewelry, and other items.
