There's nothing quite like
Philadelphia's annual Mummers Parade, which has been taking place
on the city's main street for well over 100 years.
Brightly
costumed dancers, strutters, and musicians travel down
Broad
|
|
Street early on January 1st to entertain the crowd with
their antics and musical themes.
The event
attracts tens of thousands of parade-goers each year who
brave the elements of a Philadelphia winter to watch the
Mummers.
In 1976,
Philadelphia opened a museum to pay homage to this institution and the
Mummers Museum has become a favorite with visitors worldwide who
love a good parade.
The Mummers Museum, located in South
Philadelphia where mummery
|
was begun, displays the ornate
costumes of the Mummers, decorated with sparkling sequins and feathery
ostrich plumes, and pays tribute to the thousands of individual
Mummers and Mummers organizations that have marched through the
years.
If you're timing is right, you may catch a concert of Mummers' String
Band music, played on banjos, saxophones, fiddles, and accordions.
Special children's programs
are often available as are lectures about the history of the Mummers.
