The National Museum of American
Jewish History, opened in 1976, began its inaugural year with only
40 objects and now houses more than 10,000 artifacts that represent
300 years of American Jewish history. The museum is the only one
of its kind in the country, dedicated to preserving,
|
|
interpreting, and collecting artifacts that pertain to the
American Jewish experience throughout the centuries.
Though the museum
centers on Jews and Jewish life in the United States, it
eagerly welcomes visitors of all ethnic groups and is committed
to offering programs that explore ethnic American identity,
history, art, and culture.
The museum often joins with
other ethnic museums in offering lectures, concerts, and theatrical
presentations.

The National Museum of American Jewish History shares its location
with one of the oldest synagogues in the country, Congregation Mikveh
Israel, often nicknamed the "Synagogue of the American Revolution."
The museum shop offers interesting articles of Judaica including
such objects as the "Proclaim Liberty Kiddush Cup."
