The James A. Michener Art
Museum was named for the famous author who was a long-time resident
of Doylestown, Pennsylvania. This museum features a wonderful
display of local art as well as one of the most comprehensive
collections of Pennsylvania Impressionism, with works by
|
|
artists such as
Edward Redfield and George Sotter.
The historic building
that houses the museum was built in 1884 as the Bucks County
Prison.
After a century of
use, the county stepped in to save
the building, which was scheduled for demolition.
Once a prison yard, the grounds
around the museum now host a beautiful sculpture garden.
Many temporary
exhibits travel through this museum on an annual
|
basis, serving to broaden the scope of the museum well beyond the
art of regional artists.
The small size of the Michener
Museum makes it manageable with children and often, the museum offers
a number of children's programs such as painting and sculpture classes.
