The Independence Seaport
Museum in Philadelphia is located at the picturesque Penn's Landing
waterfront area and it plays host to a world of maritime history.
Visitors will want to climb aboard the cruiser Olympia, one of
America's most historic warships.
|
|
The Olympia was used during the Spanish-American
War and fought again in World War I.
The ship once held
over 400 crewmen and officers and was decommissioned in
1922 and became a part of the museum in 1996.
For submarine lovers,
there's the Becuna.
This submarine
sunk 3 Japanese ships during World War II and patrolled the Atlantic,
tracking Soviet submarines during the Cold War years.
|
Visitors can climb down into
the "Becky" and experience the cozy life of a submarine sailor.
Aside from visiting the boats, travelers to the seaport museum will
enjoy the many exhibits that help them learn about Philadelphia's
seaport history, experience life in the steerage compartment of
a ship, and learn what makes a boat float. Special workshops are
also held on weekends.
