The Atwater Kent Museum was opened in 1941 as the city of Philadelphia's history museum. In a building that served as the Franklin Institute Science Center for over 100 years, visitors can learn about life in Philadelphia from colonial days to modern times.

The museum was named for A. Atwater Kent, Philadelphia native and radio pioneer, who saved the building from destruction in the early 1930s.

The museum's collection includes over 100,000 objects related to Philadelphia history and culture, dating back as far as 1680.

The collection encompasses paintings, photographs, prints, toys, trading cards, political memorabilia, textiles, and so much more.

Since the museum is not huge, much of the collection is located in two off-site storage areas and exhibits are rotated.

There are also an ongoing number of special exhibits each year with featured lectures and activities connected to these interesting temporary displays.
