The African-American History Museum in Philadelphia was established in 1976 for Philadelphia's bicentennial celebration. In cooperation with the Smithsonian Institute, the African American History Museum was one of the first museums in the country dedicated to the history of Black Americans.

It is the mission of the museum to collect, preserve, and interpret the material and intellectual culture of African Americans living in Philadelphia and surrounding areas.

The museum covers many topics including the Civil Rights movement and highlights the achievements of famous Black Americans in sports, arts and entertainment, architecture, politics, medicine, religion, law, and technology.

Most interesting are the African-American History Museum's special programs which are logical extensions of their exhibits and

include lectures, concerts, dance performance, poetry, story telling, and more. Special exhibits bring to the museum fine works of art and amazing stories of African-American bravery and determination.

Conveniently located in the city's historic district, the museum welcomes visitors of all ethnic backgrounds in hopes of fostering a better understanding of African American culture in the United States.
