Beautiful St. Peter's Church in Philadelphia, with its stately white spire, may not be as famous as Christ Church but its still stands as a National Historic Landmark. St. Peter's was built in 1761, during a very prosperous time for the city.

As Philadelphia grew, many Church of England worshippers had a hard time making it to Christ Church during the cold and snowy Philadelphia winters, so they called for another church to be built closer to their homes. Modern folk would laugh at the notion as the churches are built approximately 6 city blocks from each other!

St. Peter's was designed by Scottish-born builder Robert Smith, who designed other area buildings such as Philadelphia's Carpenter's Hall and Princeton University's Nassau Hall.

The beautiful spire, built in 1842, houses eight bells from the White Chapel Foundry in England. St. Peter's graveyard is equally as interesting as the lovely church and is the burial place of famous portrait painter Charles Wilson Peale, Commodore Stephen Decatur, and the chiefs of eight Indian tribes who died while visiting President Washington in Philadelphia.
