The Philadelphia Zoo is proud to be the oldest zoo in the nation. This wonderful zoo received its charter in 1859 but had to delay its opening by 15 years because of the Civil War! The Philly Zoo boasts more than 1,600 rare and exotic animals spread out over 42 acres of beautiful Victorian gardens. Children love the Primate Reserve, featuring 10 species or primates, eager to climb and make funny faces at passers-by.
Lovers of cold-blooded creatures really enjoy the zoo's spacious Reptile and Amphibian House, featuring 87 species including the King Cobra. Philadelphia was also the first to exhibit giant otters in their Carnivore House. They're joined by such species as red pandas and beautiful snow leopards. There's a great children's zoo, also the first in the nation.
Aside from animal exhibits, the Philadelphia Zoo and its staff are dedicated to animal conservation and the zoo hosts a Rare Animal Conservation Center and an Animal Health Center. Kids will also enjoy the Wild Earth Simulator, a ride in the the Zooballoon, a Victorian-style train ride, and the picturesque Swan Boats. |
