Independence Hall in Philadelphia started with humble beginnings. It was an exciting time for the colonies when, in June of 1776, Virginia delegate Richard Henry Lee stood during a meeting of the Congress and offered a resolution stating that "these United Colonies are, and of right ought to be, free and independent States."

That was just the beginning of everything that happened inside Philadelphia's famed Independence Hall, where both the Declaration of Independence and the US Constitution were signed and ratified. Constructed between 1732 and 1756 as the State House of the Province of Pennsylvania, millions upon millions of visitors have stood in the very room where Jefferson took up the job of drafting the Declaration of Independence.

The building is said to be one of the finest examples of Georgian architecture in the United States and the city has worked diligently to refurbish the building to its original splendor. Most of the furnishings are period pieces and there's an original chair that was occupied by George Washington as he presided over the Constitutional Convention.

Tours are free and are appropriate for all ages. The lines get long during the peak summer months, so visitors should arrive early to take advantage of these first come, first serve tours.
