Location: 222 N. 20th St., Philadelphia
The Franklin Institute Science Center in Philadelphia, certainly the favorite museum of most Philadelphia children, offers some of the city's best hands-on activities for kids.
Located in "museum row" on the Benjamin Franklin Parkway, the science center teaches families about everything from railroads and airplanes to electricity and the human body. Young visitors love to walk through the recently-updated plaster "heart" and will get a kick out of "discovering" electricity, just like Ben Franklin did so many years ago.
Children ages 5 to 8 can explore "The Island of the Elements" and older kids will want to visit the Space Command Center or the Sports Challenge area. All are chock full of interactive activities that provide hours of hands-on fun. There are also ongoing daily demonstrations attached to many of the exhibits and an Imax Theater and Planetarium as well.
Visitors can purchase combination tickets that combine all three attractions. The Sci-Store is a fun place to pick up a Philadelphia souvenir or a science-related gadget and there are two cafeterias and additional vending machines available at the Franklin Institute. |
