Philadelphia's Fels Planetarium at the Franklin Institute Science Center, opened in 1933, was the second planetarium built in the United States. It is estimated that, since that time, Fels Planetarium has taught nine million visitors about the stars and the planets. The planetarium was renovated in 2002 and now provides a more state-of-the-art show projected on an aluminum dome that encompasses the audience.

The facility is now ADA accessible and outfitted for those with hearing impairments. The Fels Planetarium rotates its shows, offering at least three on any given day. Shows range from standard planetarium fare to presentations about the Hubble Telescope or other timely topics. For some late night fun on Friday and Saturday evenings, check out "Sonic Vision", described as a 38-minute digitally-animated rock show that's a "musical roller coaster ride through dreamspace."

Visitors to the Fels Planetarium may also purchase combination tickets for the Franklin Institute Science Center and/or the Imax Theater at the Franklin Institute.
