The Sunoco Welcome America! gala is Philadelphia’s Fourth of July celebration, and where better to honor the day than in the heart of America’s Cradle of Liberty?
This is the holiday blowout to end all blowouts, nine days of family-oriented entertainment, exhibits and activities offering the best in American cultural tradition. Concerts, dance parties, street festivals and staples like a patriotic parade and fireworks are all on the bill.
Pre-Fourth events include a classic summer barbecue, gospel music, salsa and opera concerts and a Kids Day featuring multicultural pavilions. The renowned Philadelphia Orchestra performs July 1 from 7-9pm at Penn’s Landing, followed by a dance party and fireworks.
On the Fourth itself, it’s no holds barred. The festivities begin with the awarding of the Philadelphia Liberty Medal at 9 a.m. at historic Independence Hall. Music, food and games highlight the activities on the Benjamin Franklin Parkway from 2-6pm. Bands, drill teams, elaborate floats and huge balloons make up the big parade at 6:30pm.
At 8:30pm, Mr. “Philadelphia Freedom” himself, Elton John, performs at the Museum of Art. A massive fireworks display follows at 10:30pm.
