Fall in Philadelphia brings on a variety of events. October and November mean cool relaxation. There’s no better place to begin than in the rolling hills of Valley Forge National Historical Park, where the Continental Army spent the brutal winter of 1777-78. Touch muskets and check out the authentic outbuildings.
Through Oct. 11 (and at Christmas) at the University of Pennsylvania’s Morris Arboretum, you’ll enjoy the lavish Fall Garden and its railway display. Model trains trundle through a miniature landscape.
At Peddler’s Village, there’s the Apple Festival, Nov. 6-7. It features craft-making demonstrations, apple-butter cooking, music and a pie-eating contest. It‘s the perfect place to take ""the apple of your eye.""
The 1,050-acre Longwood Gardens boasts flower shows and is the ideal spot to picnic, and sprawling Fairmount Park is paradise for joggers and strollers.
Elsewhere, laze down scenic Route 32 along the Delaware River in northern Bucks County, a road peppered with lush foliage, wineries, bed and breakfasts, charming shops and country inns. Or you might consider a tour of the county’s 12 covered bridges.
How about a balloon ride? They’re available in Chester Springs and St. Peters.
